Dawson
8 photos
Dawson was a coal town in northern NM that suffered two terrible mine explosions, in 1913 and 1923, that killed over 350 miners in total. Many killed in the second disaster were children of men who had died in the first. The town itself was abandoned in 1950, and all that remains is this stark, high-desert cemetery. An absolutely shattering place, nestled in the peaceful foothills of high-desert New Mexico.

Elizabethtown

Once the county seat of Colfax County, Elizabethtown is now mostly abandoned, a few small house and trailers lie just outside the town's historic main center. This place, scratched out from the sage and junipers, is quite unsettling. Dates to about 1870.
