The York Minster is one of the most important religious sites in England, with a history that extends back to 627. The current structure, like most large religious buildings in Europe, was built, rebuilt and extended many times over its lifetime, but the primary structure dates to about the 11th century. It is inarguably one of England's foundational historic treasures and the centerpiece of the deeply historic city of York. Archbishops extending back to the 11th century are buried here.
